What Is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), also called endovenous radiofrequency ablation, is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure that treats the root cause of varicose veins: malfunctioning valves caused by chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
By sealing the faulty vein, RFA relieves the pressure that leads to leg pain, swelling, heaviness, and bulging veins. Once treated, the vein is gradually absorbed by the body while blood reroutes naturally to healthier veins.
When Is RFA Recommended?
✔️ When ultrasound confirms venous reflux — valve failure in veins like the great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein, or accessory veins
✔️ For patients with symptoms like heaviness, aching, swelling, throbbing, or visible varicose veins
✔️ As a first-line treatment for significant superficial vein reflux
How Does Radiofrequency Ablation Work?
✔️ The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance for absolute precision
✔️ Local anesthesia is applied for comfort
✔️ A tiny catheter is inserted into the malfunctioning vein
✔️ The catheter delivers gentle radiofrequency energy, causing the vein walls to contract and seal closed
✔️ Blood reroutes immediately to healthy veins, restoring circulation
✔️ The treated vein gradually shrinks and is absorbed by the body
Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation
✔️ Walk-in, walk-out procedure — no downtime
✔️ Relief from heaviness, aching, throbbing, swelling, and discomfort
✔️ Performed entirely in-office — no hospitals, no vein stripping
✔️ Tiny entry point — no stitches required
✔️ High success rate with durable, long-term results
Is RFA Covered by Insurance?
Yes — Radiofrequency Ablation is almost always covered by insurance when treating varicose veins caused by chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
Our office handles all prior authorizations and insurance approvals for you.
What Results Can You Expect After RFA?
– Relief from heaviness, aching, throbbing, and swelling
– Improved leg comfort and circulation within days
– Visible reduction in bulging varicose veins
– Minimal to no scarring — just a tiny entry point
– Durable, long-term results with a high success rate
Is Radiofrequency Ablation Safe?
Yes — RFA has an excellent safety profile.
Minor side effects may include:
– Temporary bruising, tightness, or mild tenderness along the treated vein
– Temporary numbness near the nerve adjacent to the treated vein, which typically resolves on its own
There is also a very small risk of developing a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) after treatment. This is uncommon, and we take every precaution to prevent it — including post-procedure walking, compression stockings, and follow-up ultrasound to monitor your healing.
In the rare event that a clot does occur, it is usually small, detected early, and easily managed. Serious complications are extremely rare.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the RFA procedure take?
Most radiofrequency ablation procedures take about 30–45 minutes. Since it’s performed in-office with local anesthesia, you can walk in and walk out the same day.
Will I need more than one RFA treatment?
RFA is typically performed on one vein at a time. If ultrasound shows reflux in more than one vein, additional sessions may be recommended as part of your personalized treatment plan.
When will I feel relief after RFA?
Many patients notice an improvement in aching, heaviness, or swelling within just a few days. Visible varicose veins often take several weeks to flatten or fade as circulation improves.
Is RFA painful?
Most patients describe only mild pressure or heat during the procedure. Local anesthetic keeps you comfortable, and there’s no need for general anesthesia or sedation.
